Tuition

The Center for International Studies does not charge for its services in preparing you for studying for a full degree at one of our partner institutions, therefore you will be responsible for paying only the direct fees charged by the university you attend. Unlike U.S. institutions, overseas universities charge different fees for different programs. An example would be that if you are interested in a program in the Humanities you would probably pay less than in the Sciences where lab expenses would be included.

Tuition amounts vary considerably but a range for an undergraduate degree may be between $US10,000 - $US12,00 for non laboratory-based programs and $US15,000 to $US18,000 for laboratory-based programs. Graduate fees can range from $US11,500 - $US17,000 per year (many take only one year). When you request information on a particular university a fee schedule will be provided by CIS. In addition to the tuition fees, you will want to be prepared for the other costs associated with traveling abroad such as travel expenses, meals (if you are not on a meal plan), local transportation, spending money, etc. If you wish to inquire about specific tuition fees for a program you can do this at http://www.sunderland.ac.uk/international/ (Look under "Fees Scholarships" section. This page will open in a new window). Also, included on this link is information on a 5% discount available to you on tuition, if you pay your whole tuition by a certain date. Additionally, your complete application sent through CIS will automatically be considered for a partial scholarship.

Accommodation

Sunderland will do their best to find you a place in university managed accommodation, in either a hall or its managed houses. Graduate students may be interested in the university's purpose-built (postgraduate) accommodation-Scotia Quay. Built on the banks of the River Wear it is within a short walk of both the St. Peter's Campus and the Chester Road Campus. Scotia Quay offers apartment and house-type units that are suitable for families and couples, as well as singles. The bedrooms at Scotia Quay have been designed to a higher specification and are considerably larger than undergraduate rooms, allowing space for relaxation as well as study.

There are five other university halls of residence and all are within walking distance of campus. All the halls benefit from 24-hour security and a cleaning service for communal areas. Each single study bedroom has a bed, wardrobe, chair and a wash basin. Pillows and a duvet are provided by the university, however students are asked to bring bed linens and a towel.

Additionally, the university manages a wide range of private properties throughout the city, which are sublet to students. Most houses offer accommodation for 2-5 students, with each student having their own single study bedroom and access to shared kitchen, bathroom and living areas. Sunderland does its best to match students with similar interests, ages, or programs. You can read more about the accommodation at Sunderland at http://www.sunderland.ac.uk/trialhalls.html .
