The University of Newcastle offers international students the perfect combination of lifestyle and learning. Academic Programs

Newcastle offers the flexibility to custom design a program from a variety of disciplines. A semester comprises 14 weeks at Newcastle and students will normally take between 30 - 40 credit points per semester (3-4 classes). Classes, or subjects as they are called, are generally worth 10 or 20 contact points and meet on average about 4 hours per week.

Tuition

Tuition amounts vary considerably but a range for an undergraduate degree may be between $US10,000 - $US12,00 for non laboratory-based programs and $US15,000 to $US18,000 for laboratory-based programs. Graduate fees can range from $US11,500 - $US17,000 per year (many take only one year). When you request information on a particular university a fee schedule will be provided by CIS. Studying in Newcastle

A lively port city on a breathtaking stretch of Australia's coastline, Newcastle boasts wonderful beaches for surfing and swimming, a low cost of living, a very favorable climate, a casual lifestyle, and it's not far from Sydney, the capital of New South Wales and largest city in Australia. Travel between Sydney and Newcastle takes approximately 1.5 hours by car, 2.5 hours by public transport (bus or train), which travel 24 hours a day. With a city population of 350,000, Newcastle offers all the usual city comforts and entertainment attractions, such as restaurants, cafes and nightclubs, parks and gardens, theatres, art galleries, shopping centers, and sporting venues.

Newcastle is also a popular tourist destination. A few miles south of the city is Australia's largest seaboard lake, Lake Macquarie, scene of many national and international sailing events, scuba diving and other popular water sports. The Central Coast region also south of Newcastle is known for its natural beauty and white sandy beaches. Less than one hour's drive to the north is the impressive harbor of Port Stephens, a popular center known for its vast dolphin population, annual whale watching, big game fishing, sailing, surfing, and windsurfing. To the west are the internationally famous wineries of the Hunter Valley, many of them more than a century old.

Student Life

Central to student life at Newcastle is the University Union. The Union building houses an array of facilities such as cafeterias, coffee shops and pubs, a bookshop, bank, post office, gift and stationery shop, and a hair salon. The Union also organizes cultural and social events throughout the semester from lunch time concerts, comedians and street theater, to arts festivals and markets. The facilities on campus support the student life and learning and you will find well-stocked libraries, computer centers, modern lecture theaters, laboratories, and excellent recreational facilities.

Upon arrival at Newcastle, you will be greeted at the airport and taken to your accommodation. Once you are settled in you will take part in a week-long Orientation Program providing you with important academic and settling-in information.

Accommodation

Depending upon the availability , students will have the choice of living in residence halls, on-campus apartments or University-managed off campus apartments. Edwards Hall, Evatt House and International House are the on-campus residence halls which offer single-room accommodation. The new Barahinaban apartment complex on-campus, offers single and shared room facilities. In addition, the University also manages off-campus townhouse facilities called Univille. The Univille locations are at Jesmond and Shortland, only a 10 minutes walk from the Callaghan campus. Many students also choose to live in apartments or shared housing in Newcastle City, close to the beaches and other city attractions. Public transport between the city and the University is frequent and reliable, serviced by both rail and bus services.
