Academic Programs

Students wishing to obtain an undergraduate degree will find that flexible general bachelor degree programs are offered in the faculties of Arts, Business & Economics and Science. These programs allow you to choose specializations from a broad range of subjects and at the same time fully develop your critical thinking skills.

The University also offers a wide range of applied and professional degrees if you wish to specialize at undergraduate level. These programs are offered in the faculties or departments of Architecture, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Law, Music, Health Science, Optometry, Planning, Property, Technology and Theology.

Potential graduate students will find Ph.D., Master's, and Postgraduate Diploma programs open to them. Students should be aware that in order to apply for a Ph.D. you should have already completed your Master's Degree. Master's Degree programs at New Zealand universities tend be more research based and therefore you will be required to submit a research proposal for approval during the application process. However, course work is increasingly being built into programs so that the combination of course and research programs are becoming available.

Often times, if you do not meet the requirement for admission into a Master's Degree program you may wish to consider applying for a Postgraduate Diploma. A Postgraduate Diploma in most disciplines allows you to complete a graduate-level qualification in one year. It is normally completed by course work only, but may sometimes include a research project. A completed Postgraduate Diploma may also qualify you for admission to a one-year Master's Degree Program. This is a common scenario for many Americans applying to a 2-year Master's Degree program. They are first accepted in the Postgraduate Diploma program, which allows them to finish the first year of their Master's Degree. They are then invited to finish the last year of the Master's Degree by completing their research and writing a thesis. Many Americans who are also considering changing fields or who wish to gain additional knowledge in a particular area or field will apply to these programs.

For information about admissions requirements at the University of Auckland please see the Undergraduate Admissions and Graduate Admissions pages.

Tuition

The Center for International Studies does not charge for its services in preparing you for studying for a full degree at one of our partner institutions, therefore you will be responsible for paying only the direct fees charged by the university you attend. Unlike U.S. institutions, overseas universities charge different fees for different programs. An example would be that if you are interested in a program in the Humanities you would probably pay less than in the Sciences where lab expenses would be included.

Tuition amounts vary considerably but a range for an undergraduate degree may be between $US10,000 - $US12,00 for non laboratory-based programs and $US15,000 to $US18,000 for laboratory-based programs. Graduate fees can range from $US11,500 - $US17,000 per year (many take only one year). When you request information on a particular university a fee schedule will be provided by CIS. In addition to the tuition fees, you will want to be prepared for the other costs associated with traveling abroad such as travel expenses, meals (if you are not on a meal plan), local transportation, spending money, etc. For exact costs on your specific program please look at the tuition fees for the University of Auckland. Studying in Auckland

Auckland, with a population of 1.2 million, is the country's largest city and is located in the north of New Zealand's North Island. Known also as the "City of Sails", it occupies a narrow isthmus between two stunning harbors and is a paradise for the city's thousands of sailing and fishing enthusiasts. This isthmus is actually an ancient volcanic plateau, thus the city is dotted with extinct volcanic cones. Most of these cones are now municipal parks, but many once served as fortified settlements for the various tribes of New Zealand's indigenous people, the Maori.

As New Zealand's biggest and most ethnically diverse city, Auckland is the country's business hub and offers all the cultural and recreational amenities you would expect from a large modern city. The city is broken down into small "villages", each with its own character, and this helps cut the city down to size allowing student to feel at home with handy local facilities such as cafes, markets, shops, pubs and clubs.

Auckland enjoys a temperate climate, with cool winters (50°- 60° Fahrenheit) and warm summers (65°- 80° Fahrenheit), giving you the opportunity to enjoy a host of outdoor recreational activities all year round including surfing, sailing, hiking and skiing. Vineyards, beautiful swimming and surf beaches, bush-clad hills and the islands of the Hauraki Gulf all are within a 30-minute car or boat ride from the city center.

Student Life

When you arrive in Auckland you will be met at the airport and transported to the campus if you have signed up for the airport pickup service. You should plan to arrive a week before classes start and during that time you will be introduced to the university through a three day practical and social orientation. Once classes begin, an optional two-day academic orientation is offered to assist you with academic related questions that might have arisen. To get the most out of your experience, we recommend that you join the Auckland University Student Association and become a member in any of the more than 120 clubs and societies that operate on and off campus.

The University of Auckland is like a small town and as such offers a number of on-campus facilities to make you feel right at home. Apart from the "normal" facilities you would expect (a world-class library, computer labs, etc.) you will also find cafes, pubs, University Recreation Center, a hair salon, post office, travel agency, health center, book and computer stores and a weekly campus market. To ensure your success while you are abroad, the University also offers all of its support services to you in the form of an international office, campus chaplain, student learning center, and a student health and counseling center.
