DUBLIN CITY UNIVERSITY

The University

Dublin City University (DCU) is one of Ireland’s youngest and most progressive universities. Voted the “Top Irish University” in 2004 by the Sunday Irish Times, DCU is home to more than 10,000 students from all over the world. When it comes to teaching and learning you will find that DCU’s academic system is loosely based upon the American system (unlike most other Irish universities) where you will have “continual assessment” rather than only having one or two projects/presentations decide your entire grade. That being said, there is much more responsibility placed upon the student for learning the material than in the U.S. Complementing DCU’s strong academics are facilities that rival even the best U.S. universities. There are television and sound studios, computer labs and networking facilities, state-of-the-art science labs, and graphic design facilities. You will be directly enrolled in classes at the University meaning that you will have full integration into Irish academic life.

Tuition

The Center for International Studies does not charge for its services in preparing you for studying for a full degree at one of our partner institutions, therefore you will be responsible for paying only the direct fees charged by the university you attend. Unlike U.S. institutions, overseas universities charge different fees for different programs. An example would be that if you are interested in a program in the Humanities you would probably pay less than in the Sciences where lab expenses would be included.
Tuition amounts vary considerably but a range for an undergraduate degree may be between $US10,000 - $US12,00 for non laboratory-based programs and $US15,000 to $US18,000 for laboratory-based programs. Graduate fees can range from $US11,500 - $US17,000 per year (many take only one year). When you request information on a particular university a fee schedule will be provided by CIS.
In addition to the tuition fees, you will want to be prepared for the other costs associated with traveling abroad such as travel expenses, meals (if you are not on a meal plan), local transportation, spending money, etc. In your pre-departure information we will notify you of other costs that you can expect. If you wish to inquire about specific tuition fees for a program you can visit this link: http://www.dcu.ie/prospective/finance.shtml

Studying in Dublin

A young, vibrant city, Dublin ranks among the top tourist destinations in Europe, and for good reason. While a noteworthy capital city with a strong sense of history and culture, it is at the same time down-to-earth and friendly. Whole areas of the city, like Temple Bar, buzz with energy and creativity. As the Irish would say, Dublin is full of the “craic” - good times, liveliness, and style.

Student Life

A large part of student life at DCU takes place away from campus in the city of Dublin. With just over a million people, the city is a student’s dream. Great nightlife, music, theatre, shopping, and eating are all at your fingertips and just a short bus ride or cab ride from the University campus and your housing.
Additionally, on campus the Student Union at DCU is one of the most active in Ireland. There are over 100 student clubs and organizations in which you will be able to participate in, ranging from academic to cultural to sport. The on-campus facilities for students are amazing! You will find yourself meeting friends daily at the Hub, DCU’s student center. It hosts pubs and cafés, game room, supermarket and travel shop. The nearby sports complex boasts a rock climbing wall, 25 meter pool, three full size basketball courts, and multitudes of fitness equipment. Between the city and campus life, you will never want for things to do while studying at DCU!
