The University

Since its establishment in 1967, Macquarie University has been a pioneer in Australian education, with its innovative teaching and research. It is known internationally for its groundbreaking research in the earth sciences, laser physics, linguistics and education. The university has developed many international links as it recognizes the need for international and multicultural experiences.

Macquarie, located on 55 acres of parkland ten miles northwest of Sydney in the suburb of North Ryde, is served by regular bus service. It is set in beautiful rolling hills, adjacent to the large Macquarie Center shopping plaza. Ample shops and eateries are available on campus as well. This campus is also located just 15 minutes from the 2000 Olympic Stadium.

Academic Programs

Macquarie University has 3 colleges, the College of Commerce, the College of Humanities and Social Science and the College of Science and Technology, all of which offer a broad range of quality courses. The academic programs provide exciting and flexible choices for undergraduate and graduate students, with wide range of subjects and an excellent teaching staff. A normal course load for students is three to four courses per semester.

Financial Information

The Center for International Studies does not charge for its services in preparing your for studying for a full degree at one of our partner institutions, therefore you will be responsible for paying on the direct fees charged by the university you attend. Unlike US institutions, overseas universities charge different fees for different programs. An example would be that if you are interested in a program in the Humanities you would probably pay less than in the Sciences where lab expenses would be included.

Tuition
Tuition amounts vary considerably but a range for an undergraduate degree may be between US$10,000 - US$12,000 for non-laboratory based programs and US$15,000 - US$18,000 for laboratory based programs. Graduate fees can range from US$11,500-US$17,000 per year (many take only year). When you request information on a particular university a fee schedule will be provided by CIS. In addition to the tuition fees, you will want to be prepared for the other cost associated with traveling abroad such as travel expense, meal (if you are not on a meal plan), local transportation, spending money, etc. If you wish to inquire about specific tuition fees for a program you can do so by visiting http://www.international.mq.edu.au/study/courselist.html . Macquarie University Based Scholarships
There are a variety of different scholarship opportunities available for you to apply for depending on your previous academic achievements and the program you are apply for at Macquarie . We have outlined some of the scholarships below.

Your scholarship application must be submitted directly to CIS along with your full-degree application. We will submit all application materials to Macquarie on your behalf.

MU's International Scholarship Program:

Macquarie University's International Scholarship Program is aimed at attracting outstanding students from around the world and recognizing students who have distinguished themselves academically in their specific discipline area. The scholarship is highly competitive and is awarded on the basis of academic merit. The scholarships are awarded as international tuition fee waivers only, this scholarship does not provide money toward your living expenses. Macquarie University offers Research Award for Areas of Research Excellence (iMURS) to postgraduate students with exceptional research potential. This award is aimed at assisting International citizens to undertake full-time PhD studies in one of the 11 Macquarie University Areas of Research Excellence. Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarships:

The Australian Government awards about 300 IPRS each year to international students commencing Masters degrees by research or Doctoral studies in areas of research strength at Australian Universities. IPRS proves tuition fees and overseas student health coverage. These scholarships are awarded on academic merit and research potential. Student Life

As an International Student you have the support of the International Office, which arranges an airport reception and orientation program for you, assists you with any needs you have, and provides on-going advising during your stay. One of the first things you will do when you arrive is meet with your advisor and begin to outline the work you will perform for your program.

Macquarie realizes that university life is more than academic study, and so, in addition to its excellent teaching facilities, it offers you social and sporting opportunities. Within its landscaped courtyards and gardens, you will find ideal spots to meet your friends and to make new ones. The active Sports Association and Students' Union organize activities and clubs including water skiing, squash, netball, tennis, rock concerts and market days. You will also find a variety of food outlets, common rooms, and other services and facilities for students (doctors, travel agents, banks, hairdresser, dentist, counselors), as well as convenient library and computer facilities.

Accommodation

Macquarie University has numerous temporary and permanent accommodation options available for international students. There are over 800 bed spaces available throughout the various accommodation options on and around campus including seventy-five new 5 bedroom townhouses which are self-catered. There are also other various self-catering apartments close to the University. The University's Accommodation Office assists students in finding temporary and permanent accommodation.
